Online personalized products retailer Zazzle has settled a lawsuit concerning the use of a copyrighted font, resolving claims that the company exceeded the permissions granted under a licensing agreement with the designer. Judge Beth Labson Freeman dismissed the case last Thursday after the parties notified the US District Court for the Northern District of California that they had settled. Nicky Laatz alleged Zazzle, an online marketplace, fraudulently obtained a license for her Blooming Elegant fonts through Mohamed Alkhatib, an alleged undisclosed agent and defendant in the suit. Zazzle then allegedly added the fonts to its design tool in violation of the license.

Laatz’ complaint alleged Zazzle’s use of the font went beyond the terms agreed upon in their licensing contract. Although the specific terms of the settlement have not been disclosed, this resolution underscores the importance of clear contractual agreements, according to LegalNewsFeed.
